SAN DIEGO February 27, 2016 - A magnificent reproduction of the original Nativity with St. Francis and St. Lawrence (created by Caravaggio) has been in the possession of the Archdiocese of Palermo, Sicily for the last 30 years. This revelation of this precise recreation of the original Nativity scene, (stolen from the Oratorio of San Lorenzo in1969) is the subject of what now appears to be a possible missing National Treasure.

The reproduction was carefully researched by reviewing and studying other Caravaggio paintings with attention to details such as historic color match, brush stroke technique and dimensional accuracy of the original as research allows. The painting is now unaccounted for an undetermined amount of time after the Archdiocese received it in December 1986.

In January1987, Palermo archdiocese officials promised in a letter, the new painting would be hung in place of the original Caravaggio Nativity scene stolen from the oratorio in1969. All documentation authorizing the production and status of the project are in writing from the Italian church, Italian government and other corroborating sources such as US Customs.

With the guidance by approval of the Archdiocese of Palermo through the Holy See and full authorization of the Italian Government, this painting was commissioned and produced early in1986. It was delivered to the Palermo Archdiocese curia in mid December, 1986. It took more than two years to secure initial permission from Italian government authorities to initiate the start of the painting. Well-publicized by televised national media, the painting was sent as a Christmas gift from the artist, Noel Baron of San Diego California, to the people of Palermo.

Sky Arte recently collaborated with an art consortium, Factum-Arte to research and technically execute through digital imaging, a reproduction of the same Nativity scene. They ceremoniously dedicated it to the Church and displayed the work over the altar of the Oratorio of San Lorenzo, December 12, 2015.

It is not known if Sky Arte (or Factum Arte) searched for the presence of another existing reproduction. It is believed had Sky Arte been aware of the earlier painting in the possession of the archdiocese, their actions in commissioning Factum Arte may have been quite different and possibly, may have taken another course considering the immense, in-depth research prior to the production image that now hangs in the oratorio.

Details outlining the production, delivery and recognition to the 1986 Nativity painting's creation are all sited on our website. They include the correspondence between the Archbishop of Palermo, officials in the Archdiocese, the Italian Cultural arts division of the Italian embassy, the US Customs service, the Italian police and an independent Art Recovery service. Consultation and guidance with a man who worked undercover with Scotland Yard and attempted to buy the stolen original years before is also included. There are warnings from numerous sources that Organized Crime maybe involved.

Copies of the records, authorizations, and communications with the Italian Government and the Palermo Archdiocese produced during the creation of the painting are available. There are articles in National Art Journals and local TV interviews covering the creation of the painting, its research and the delivery of the finished artwork to Sicily. It was considered possible that it was an Italian national treasure by a Vice Consul of the Italian Government in San Diego if the painting was used to officially replace a lost National Treasure.

Read about all details at www.waveourflag.com  and the astounding recreation of another Caravaggio that was destroyed during the bombing of Berlin during the Second World War.

The basic story was the subject of a NBC nightly News Broadcast produced in December of 1986. It may be viewed on the website or seen directly at Youtube.com  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gc_LgPlwyg

If any person or group does know the disposition or location of the painting, please contact us at our website. A request to the Italian police Art Recovery Unit (Carabinieri TPC) will be sent to conduct an inquiry and investigation based on the fact that the painting may have been stolen or used for an unlawful purpose.
